Subject: DEVELOPMENT BY DESIGN (dyd02) Conference, Dec 1-2, 2002 ============================================================ DEVELOPMENT BY DESIGN (dyd02) 2nd International Conference on Open Collaborative Design for Sustainable Innovation December 1-2, 2002, Bangalore, India http://www.thinkcycle.org/dyd02 Sponsored by Media Lab Asia, Alliance for Global Sustainability (MIT/AGS) and Concept Labs In Cooperation with ACM SIGCHI, MIT Media Lab, ThinkCycle, Indian Institute of Science, Srishti and Digital Nations Online Paper Submissions and Open Peer Review New Submission Deadline: Oct 7th, 2002 Abstract ======== Although technological advances into the 21st century have brought many benefits to industrialized society, a significant part of the world (nearly 2 billion people) still does not have access to clean water, adequate nutrition, and affordable health care. The rural population of the world's developing countries and many indigenous groups lack basic educational, economic, and political rights and freedoms. This conference seeks to establish a critical dialogue towards collaborative and sustainable design innovation to tackle global challenges in the environment and underserved communities. Topics of Interest (including but not limited to) ================== * Critical design challenges for sustainable innovations in the environment and underserved communities. * What methods and practices support the design of sustainable technologies in developing countries and indigenous communities? * How must these interventions be developed to support local knowledge, resources, social and environmental concerns? * What technologies and practices must we adopt in the "developed world" to conserve and minimize the environmental burden everywhere? * Case studies from design of sustainable technology and development interventions. * How do we assess the social, economic and environmental impact of deploying novel technologies? * How do we develop collaborative mechanisms to facilitate exchange, raise awareness and harness the expertise of researchers and stakeholders towards sustainable design of technology for their own communities and the environment? * Developing interdisciplinary curriculum for teaching sustainable design. * What are the intellectual property issues involved in collaborative open-source engineering design? * How should meaningful partnerships be developed between academia, industry, government and non-governmental sectors to address the challenges of sustainable design? Participation Guidelines ======================== We invite diverse perspectives from academia, industry, government and non-governmental organizations, as well as independent innovators. We encourage participation of an inter-disciplinary mix of researchers and practitioners in education, sustainable development, engineering/product design, human-computer interaction, environmental and social sciences. All participants should submit a 5-10 page technical paper, 2 page position paper, poster or video entry (10-15 mins) with 1-2 page abstract. All submissions must be posted online at the conference website in PDF and MS Word format (video tapes should be mailed to the organizers). See conference website for more details. The program committee will review all papers online and we invite the general public for open peer reviews as well. Participants can choose either public or private reviews for their submissions. Full Conference Papers Due: Oct 7th, 2002 Student Posters Due: Oct 25th, 2002 Workshop Position Papers: Oct 25th, 2002 Accepted Papers Due: Nov 11th, 2002 Selected participants with compelling papers and exceptional needs may qualify to receive travel support and accommodation.
